Synopsis

Moliere’s take on Commedia dell’Arte gets updated to the disco-crazed 70’s, as two sets of young lovers, both with miserly old fathers, have to entreat the help of a crafty servant. Scapino sets out to ambush, snare, and trick both skinflint fathers out of their money all in the name of love.  Slapstick, puns and confusion snowball out of control in this hilarious, zany, and wacky re-telling of a classic story.

If your father wants to marry you off to the child of a business associate, but secretly you've already met the love of your life, you're going to need a crafty servant to sort this out, preferably making things as complicated as possible in the process. You had better find Scapino.

This play sports not one but two young lovers with miserly old fathers who want to determine their marital destiny. Ottavio has met and secretly married the lovely Hyacinth, and Leandro has fallen in love with the gypsy beauty Zerbinetta and needs money to buy her freedom. But Ottavio's father, Argante, has arranged to marry his son to the long-hidden daughter of Leandro's father, Geronte. So both young men entreat Scapino, Leandro's valet, to make their furious fathers accept their new loves, and trick the skinflints out of a great deal of money. Add another servant, a nurse, a bum and singing waiters, and Moliere’s story gets an updated zany, wacky re-telling.

"The good Lord has blessed me with quite a genius for clever ideas and inspired inventions which the less talented, in their jealousies, call deceits and trickery!" – Scapino
