Synopsis
“The play’s a sort of wishing out loud ~ it’s the way I would have liked my childhood to have been.”
O’Neill’s only comedy is a surprisingly warm portrayal of middle class life in “large small town America”. Set on July 4, 1906, the play shows us a 17 year old youth’s firsts ~ first kiss, first break up, first drink, first reunion, and first realization that his parents seem to have gotten it right ~ the first time. Sweet but not saccharine, sad but not bitter, it is the perfect play to warm the heart on those cool autumn evenings and remind us why those holiday family gatherings are so important.
